The notoriously press-shy Page disappointingly uttered just a few words about his optimism for the company and turned the call over to other executives, revealing little about his plans to run the world's most profitable Internet company.
His cameo appearance - and the 370 words he spoke - made for biting headlines: "What is Google's new CEO thinking? His CFO will tell you", wrote one blogger.
Hardly surprisingly, Google shares dived more than 5.5pc in after-hours trading, despite a 20pc leap in profits.
Larry Page is making investors nervous. Judging by his actions since he took the helm earlier this month, his ideas for running the company appear to have changed since his creation of a search engine called BackRub with his pal Sergey at college 15 years ago.
