Rumor: Specs for First Chrome OS Netbook, "Alex," Leaked

Whoops! Google has allegedly accidentally unleashed specifications for the first official Chrome OS netbook, dubbed the Samsung "Alex." We hope that's just an internal name for the likely 10-inch netbook that's expected to launch sometime this summer.

A Chrome bug report—still accessible—is the source of the internal name. As for the netbook's raw details, a series of Alex specifications popped up in a Google Document found within the company's code repository. The contents of the document haven't been confirmed, nor are they even accessible anymore.

However, if this mysterious source is to be believed, then here's the lineup for the Alex. Samsung's netbook is predicted to come with a 1200-by-800 pixel display that will likely feature a webcam built right above the screen.

The ten-inch netbook will run on a 1.5-GHz dual-core Intel Atom CPU, the N550, which comes as part of Intel's Pineview series of 45-nanometer processors. For the uninitiated, Pineview is both the codename and successor to Intel's first foray into low-power, mobile-themed processors, Diamondville. The former comes under the Pine Trail platform; the latter never really had a platform name, per se, unless you're counting "Atom" itself, which is really the overall brand name for Intel's low-power processor line.

Back to the Alex: The unknown source claims that the netbook will come equipped with two gigabytes of RAM and a Samsung SSD, but no capacity sizes for the drive were revealed in the allegedly leaked information. As far as connections go, the Alex is rumored to hold a 3G card, the Qualcomm Gobi 2000, for anywhere-you-go Internet access. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi–no connection type given–will also join the Alex.
What else? You'll find a card reader, some USB ports, and a VGA output. Again, there's not much detail to go on with those, including whether the USB ports themselves will sport the new USB 3.0 standard instead of its antiquated, slower cousin. And that's it.

There's chatter that the Google I/O event in San Francisco next month could shed a few more details on the existence—and real name—of the Alex Chrome OS netbook. After all, if this a product that's supposed to launch this summer, it's about time that some concrete details start coming out of the woodwork.

OSX Growing Faster Than Windows? Not Really.

Apple is beating Microsoft in operating system market share growth! Which means we're but scant years away from an Apple-dominated world in servers and desktops, right? Not really.

The latest update from Gartner has led to a few fun headlines but, for the most part, Apple's growth in OS market share is more a noteworthy talking point than a realistic assault against Microsoft's entrenched Windows operating system.

Here's why. It's true: The latest Gartner figures for worldwide operating system market share do place Apple's growth above rival Microsoft's–Linux beats out Microsoft in growth between 2009 and 2010 as well.
Gartner is calculating these numbers based on the total revenue generated by a company's operating systems for 2009 sales and 2010 sales. Within this time period, Apple jumped from a total revenue figure of $449 million dollars to $520 million, or the 15.8 percent growth that Gartner correctly reports. Microsoft, in contrast, jumped from a (mere) revenue figure of $21.9 billion dollars to $23.8 billion dollars–a growth of only around 8.8 percent. Voila—Apple wins!

But if you look at the statistics for market share, the numbers tell a little bit different of a story. Apple's market share rose from 1.6 to 1.7 percent between 2009 and 2010, or a difference of one-tenth of a percent. Microsoft, in contrast, increased its market share from 77.9 percent to 78.6 percent. That's a difference of seven-tenths of a percent. Apple might have sold more desktops and laptops featuring its operating system between 2009 and 2010, but Microsoft actually gained more market share, in total, than Apple.

Of course, we're ignoring the elephant in the room: It's a bit erroneous to suggest that Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, has, "beat Gates in every category but one: overall market penetration. And even that may be changing," as ReadWriteWeb's Klint Finley puts it. Microsoft still enjoys a commanding lead in its operating system market share and operating system revenue over every other competitor—twelve times the revenue of second-place competitor IBM over 2010.

That said, Apple has managed to push past Microsoft in raw profits. According to the figures from most recent quarterly statements announced by both companies, Apple reported $5.99 billion in profit to Microsoft's $5.23 billion for the second quarter of 2011. Similarly, Apple's revenue generation was at $24.67 billion to Microsoft's $16.43–and you can thank Apple's iPhone business for most of these statistics.

But Apple's OSX topping Microsoft Windows? Gartner's figures combine consumer and server editions of operating systems together, which naturally pushes in Microsoft's favor. But even if we were to eliminate that from the equation, Apple still has a long way to go to before OSX "takes over" the modern computing era.

Will Your Android Phone Get Gingerbread (and Google Video Chat?)

Congrats! If you're an Android phone user, you may or may not be getting video chat. That's because the latest Google feature for its mobile operating system is only expected to work on phones running the Android Gingerbread update, or OS version 2.3. If your device isn't getting Gingerbread, it's not getting video chat either.

Welcome to the world of Android fragmentation, where the power of the upgrade is wielded by the individual smartphone manufactures rather than a single entity—or, in Apple's case, the single manufacturer that makes the phone. Whether it's a hardware concern or a matter of manufacturer resource allocation, the simple fact of the matter is that just because a phone says Android doesn't mean that it can run all the way up the software upgrade chain.

As it stands, a relatively scant number of phones currently ship with the Android 2.3 update even preinstalled onto the device: Samsung's Nexus S and Galaxy S 2, for example. And even though Gingerbread was officially released on December 6 of last year, manufacturers have continued to build and launch devices that use the previous iteration of Google's OS: 2.2, or "Froyo."

Take, for example, LG's G2X: Launched with Froyo in mid-April, both LG and T-Mobile have confirmed that the device will be getting its Gingerbread update at some point in the future—possibly a June or July release, according to upgrade information found on LG's Danish website.

Other phones, especially those delivered before Gingerbread even hit the street, will have to suffer through a Walt Disney-like queue before they gain access to Google's latest version of the Android OS. For many of these smartphones, like the HTC Droid Incredible or LG Optimus One series of smartphones, an upgrade to Gingerbread is in the works. But the big question is: When?

And for other devices–especially those who never had a chance to taste Google's Froyo–you can rule out any kind of upgrade to Gingerbread. That might include the Motorola Cliq, which is still stuck on Android 2.1, as well as the HTC Droid Eris: No Froyo, no Gingerbread.

So what's a consumer to do? Well, if you're holding one of the 65 percent of Android devices that are currently on version 2.2 of Google's mobile OS, you're in luck: Odds are significant that you'll be able to tap into Google's newer OS, for we have yet to see any official reports from any manufacturers indicating that they intend to lock a specific smartphone at Android 2.2. Manufacturers tend to just not give much word as to what point in their software development cycles a specific device will receive a Gingerbread update–you might even need a birthday candle for your Gingerbread, in some cases.

Sony Corp. Exec to Discuss PlayStation Network Breach

Sony Corp executive deputy president Kazuo Hirai is about to step into the batter's box, but expectations are high that he'll need to hit one out of the park in order to save face for the company's missteps over the past two weeks, otherwise known as the PlayStation Network security breach.

Hirai is planning to hold a press conference in Tokyo at 2 p.m. tomorrow, or 1 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. It's the first time an executive—not a blogger or marketing contact—is going to address the many issues surrounding the recent loss of the PlayStation Network's capabilities and, worse, the potential loss of its users' credit card information.

Hirai, who's expected to succeed current Sony Corp CEO Howard Stringer, plans to address the ongoing investigation that Sony's performing for the PlayStation Network breach, as well as the general state of Sony's information management infrastructure. There's been no word as to what an expected date for resuming PlayStation Network service might be, but Hirai is expected to chat about that as well.

Sony announced this past Tuesday that hackers had managed to break through the security of the PlayStation Network and access users' personal information–possibly including credit card details.

The company didn't explicitly confirm the latter, but subsequent, unverified reports have suggested that lists of credit card numbers are "floating" around underground hacker message boards. And as we've reported, some PlayStation Network users have popped up on various online social networks to say that their cards have been used to make fraudulent purchases throughout the world.

Sony now faces a class-action suit in California, charging that the company failed to adequately protect, encrypt, and secure customer data. And according to Kotaku's Michael McWhertor, various departments within the U.S. government have turned their eye toward Sony as well. The Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the Federal Trade Commission, and 22 different state attorneys generals are starting investigations of their own related to the PlayStation Network's security issue.

"The Department of Homeland Security is aware of the recent cyber intrusion to Sony's PlayStation Network and Qriocity music service," said spokesman Chris Ortman in an interview with Nextgov. "DHS' U. S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team is working with law enforcement, international partners and Sony to assess the situation."

Legislators have also started inquiring about the matter. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Democrat, sent a letter to Sony president Jack Tretton to inquire why the company took as much time as it did before notifying customers about the security breach. He's also asked Sony to provide free access to credit reporting services for two years, as well as, "sufficient insurance to protect them from the possible financial consequences of identity theft."

Report: Mac OS X Lion Features Instapaper Challenge Called 'Reading List'

 
Apple is reportedly working on a new feature for Mac OS X Lion that would rival services like Instapaper and Readability, MacRumors is reporting. Called "Reading List," it's a bookmarking service would allow you to flag and save pages to read later.

MacRumors says the bookmark syncing feature is inactive and is currently hidden in the most recent Lion builds. Reading List isn't mentioned in any of the documentation for the updated OS either.

Apple released a developer preview of Lion about a month ago. It is expected to be unveiled at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) which kicks off on June 6 and will have a focus on software. However, it's likely the full, public version of Lion won't come out until later in the year.


PCMag's lead software analyst Michael Muchmore got an early glimpse of Lion in Febraury. Among some of the never-before seen features he got a look at are AirDrop, a wireless file-sharing utility; a redesigned Mail app; Resume, which presents the OS and Apps in the exact state at shutdown; Versions, which allows app developers to implement a feature that saves multiple snapshots of any documents being worked on; and AutoSave, which does exactly what the name suggests by saving documents automatically.

If Reading List is a part of Lion, it will be a direct challenge to other bookmarking apps like Instapaper, ReadItLater, News.me, and others. However, more Lion features will become apparent over time. Stay with PCmag for more details on Mac OS X Lion as they're revealed.

Controversial Dogfighting App Rebranded 'KG Dogfighting' Back in the Android Market

The controversial dogfighting app, "Dog Wars," has been renamed "KG Dogfighting" and is back in the Android Market.

Created by developer Kage Games, "KG Dogfighting" lets you "feed, water, train and fight your virtual dog against other players." It's caused quite a stir among animal advocacy groups with the Human Society and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals urging Google to remove the app earlier this week.

"Android should drop 'Dog Wars' from its online market and join the national movement to save dogs from this violent practice," Humane Society president Wayne Pacelle said. "Because 'Dog Wars' actually instructs players on how to condition a dog using methods that are standard in organized dogfighting, this game may be a virtual training ground for would-be dogfighters. Its timing and message are all wrong."

Perhaps the most notorious former dogfighter, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick also spoke out against the game.

"I've come to learn the hard way that dogfighting is a dead-end street," he said Monday in reference to his 20-month stint in federal prison for a dogfighting conviction. "Now I am on the right side of this issue, and I think it's important to send the smart message to kids, and not glorify this form of animal cruelty, even in an Android app."

The makers of the game note that it is "just a game" and its listed as "high maturity."

"We've heard thoughts from many dog and animal lovers about our app and first we, as dog lovers and dog owners ourselves, would like to thank you for your thoughts and for the work many of you do on behalf of our canine friends," reads the app's page in the Android Market. "We do not condone violence towards animals or humans, and we are confident in humankind's ability to distinguish between a rudimentary game and the consequences of real life."

Google said the app was "removed based on a trademark infringement complaint," but the company declined to comment further on the matter.

PopCap Buys Social Game Developer ZipZapPlay

PopCap Games, maker of popular casual games like Bejeweled, has acquired social game startup ZipZapPlay.

"The team at ZipZapPlay is one of the best in the social games scene, and combined with our existing group in Seattle gives us the opportunity to dramatically expand our development resources," John Vechey, PopCap co-founder and vice president of corporate strategy and development, said in a press release. "While the acquisition creates immediate cross-promotional and operations benefits, this is a strategic move with huge long-term potential; we believe ZipZapPlay can help us further evolve and expand the definition of social games."

ZipZapPlay is behind such titles as Baking Life, a game that has more than 2.2 million active players per month on Facebook. Could this move give top dog social game developer Zynga a run for its money? Zynga is the number one developer on Facebook with about 257 million users playing its games every month. According to AppData, it has the top two games on the social networking site. CityVille has 88.7 million monthly average users and FarmVille has 47 million.

PopCap, by contrast, is the number 14 developer on the site with 16.1 million monthly average users.
But it's clear PopCap is placing an increased emphasis on social games, particularly on Facebook. Besides the acquisition of ZipZapPlay, PopCap recently announced the creation of "4th and Battery," a development studio aimed at creating games for Facebook, PCs, and iOS-based devices.

"Adding ZipZapPlay's strong design and development team to our rapidly-growing social games group is a big move for us," PopCap co-founder and chief creative officer Jason Kapalka said. "ZipZapPlay is a great cultural fit: a truly creative company that lives and breathes in the space."

Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

What Does Sony Owe Us for Its PlayStation Network Outage?

Free games? Free DLC? What do you want from Sony in compensation for its agonizingly long PlayStation Network outage?

Sony's online network has been down since April 20, after it was hacked by an unknown party. Sony has since been sued, accusing the company of failing to adequately protect, encrypt, and secure its customer data. The suit seeks damages for the data loss and PlayStation Network downtime.

That may have been on Sony's mind on Friday, when the company's latest blog post addressed what will happen to customer's saved games, data, and other aspects of game play.

Perhaps the most interesting bit of information is listed at the bottom, however: "Will there be a goodwill gesture for the time we haven't been able to utilize PSN/Qriocity?" the blog's FAQ asks. "We are currently evaluating ways to show appreciation for your extraordinary patience as we work to get these services back online."

Sony Online Entertainment also said that it will be holding "special events" for subscribers to its "DC Universe Online" and "Free Realms" massively multiplayer online games.
Unlike the Xbox Live network, Sony's PlayStation Network is a free service. But the inability to play multiplayer games, download new demos, movies, and music, and access other online services is grating, especially with so prolonged an outage.


What should customers get?

Since the PSN is a free service, I'm not entirely convinced that we should be compensated with free goodies. On the other hand, that's partially offset by the fact that I still have tons of single-player games on my backlog. If I'm a "Call of Duty" fanatic, I'd be pissed.

And that gives us a foundation to start constructing our argument.

In no particular order, here are five things that Sony might consider giving to customers to appease them:

1.) A free three-month subscription to PlayStation Plus. A $4/month value, the service provides free games, discounts, one-hour game trials, and more. It would be a great way to hook people on the service and give them freebies as a way of saying "We're sorry".

2.) Free multiplayer DLC. Parenting a toddler takes away one of the elements of multiplayer gaming, trash-talking, which means that I usually spend my evenings offing computer-controlled baddies. But picking a few multiplayer-centric games and offering some free DLC (or an experience boost) might be soothe some nerves.

3.) Games, games, games. The easiest solution, but one of the most popular. Allow gamers a $10 ($30?) credit in the PlayStation Store, and let them go nuts. Wall Street won't like it, but to heck with 'em.

4.) Kevin Butler commits a ritual rite of penance via an online video. I think this is due the gaming community anyway, but who wouldn't want to see this?

5.) Free credit monitoring services for a year. Boring, right? Tell that to all the people who feel (correctly or not) that their credit cards were stolen or duplicated after the hack.

Cette initiative, disponible quant à elle depuis le mois d'avril, souhaite contribuer par l'entremise de la technologie à favoriser les relations sociales, souvent perdues dans le monde virtuel des réseaux sociaux sans contact visuel.

Une fois l'outil installé, la lecture de longs textes est grandement facilitée. Durant l'installation, un petit icône (un R) s'ajoute dans la barre d'adresse. Au moment de lire le texte de votre choix, ce bouton peut être activé d'un seul clique. Le texte en question surgit dans une nouvelle fenêtre épurée, et ce, peu importe le nombre de pages du texte d'origine. Une seule nouvelle fenêtre pour la lecture peut être défilée de haut en bas comme un charme, dans un format de style écriture noire, fond blanc qui se veut idéale pour l'impression. Aussi disponible pour Google Chrome.

L'iOS 5 serait en test interne chez Apple

Nous évoquions dans ce billet l'arrivée de l'iOS 5 à l'automne.
Pourtant, 9to5mac relaye une information provenant de l'éditeur de "Où Trouver?" (disponible ici sur l'App Store) qui s'est vu recevoir un rapport d’erreur de la part d’Apple avec la mention de l'iOS 5.

Comme pour tous les rapports d'erreurs, l'éditeur prend connaissance des différentes erreurs à corriger dans son application pour qu’elle soit disponible sur l’App Store.

Mais ce qui a surpris le développeur, c'est que l’employé d’Apple qui a envoyé ce rapport utilisait l’application depuis un iPhone équipé d’iOS 5.

Autre point intéressant à noter, en testant l’application sur iOS 5, le rapport fait référence à l’API "MKUserLocationBreadCrumb" qui est liée à la géolocalisation du terminal et de son évolution dans le temps, ce qui pourrait alimenter les espoirs de voir du nouveau au niveau des cartes et des fonctions liées.



Enfin, il apparaît que l'app a été testée sur 5 iDevices équipés de l'iOS 5 dont 4 iPhone 4 GSM et 1 iPad de 1ère génération.




Maintenant, de là à espérer que l'iOS 5 pourrait sortir avant l'automne, il n'y qu'un pas à franchir (avec la plus grande prudence !) tout en considérant qu'au minimum l'iOS 5 pourrait être présenté pendant la WWDC’11 début juin comme on l'a vu ici.

Pour faire simple ABBYY Business Card Reader vous permet, comme son nom l’indique, en prenant une simple photo avec votre iPhone de remplir tous les champs en un seul coup. Je l’ai essayé et pour peu que l’éclairage soit suffisant, il n’y a rien à redire.


Si toutefois une incertitude subsiste l’appli vous met le caractère en rouge au cas où. Il ne vous reste plus qu’à vous rendre dans les contacts pour passer un coup de fil ou envoyer un mail. Les professionnels vont l’adorer.
D’autres fonctionnalités sont également incluses (tri par ordre alphabétique ou par entreprise…). L’appli garde également en mémoire une image des cartes de visite et vous permet de trier ces cartes, ou encore de joindre votre correspondant d’un simple clic sur le numéro de téléphone.
En bref, dans le genre c’est une appli très simple et très bien faites. ABBYY Business Card Reader est disponible sur l’appstore pour 3,99 euros et nous vous en offrons 10 licences.

Pour celles et ceux qui voudraient tester il existe aussi une version lite gratuite juste ici.

Une voiture volante commercialisée en 2011?

Difficile pour un véhicule de répondre aux nombreuses exigences des instances américaines de sécurité routière et aérienne. C'est pourtant ce que vient de réaliser l'entreprise Terrafugia avec sa voiture volante Transition.

Le véhicule à quatre roues, qui peut se transformer en un petit avion de 8,4 mètres d'envergure, a obtenu l'autorisation de dépasser de 50 kilos la limite de poids permise par les autorités aériennes, une exception qui permettra d'inclure des équipements nécessaires à la sécurité routière.

La Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) a donc accepté un dépassement de la limite actuelle au décollage fixée à 600 kilos pour les avions sportifs légers.

Le Transition pourra donc inclure une cage de sécurité et des coussins gonflables, deux éléments essentiels à la sécurité, tant aérienne que routière.

Cette voiture volante a effectué ses premiers vols expérimentaux en mars 2009. Elle a été conçue par des étudiants en ingénierie du Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Voici quelques caractéristiques de l'appareil :

• il est propulsé par une hélice arrière;
• il peut rouler sur n'importe quelle route;
• il peut atteindre 150 km/h sur la route;
• il peut atteindre une vitesse de 185 km/h dans les airs;
• il a des ailes repliables en moins d'une minute pour atteindre les 2 mètres d'envergure;
• il a besoin de 518 mètres de pistes pour décoller.

À cet égard, Terrafugia concède qu'il est plus juste de parler d'un avion roulant que d'une voiture volante. Les conducteurs devront aussi avoir un permis de pilote pour prendre place à bord de l'appareil.

Selon le site Internet de l'entreprise, environ 70 clients ont déjà réservé un Transition, et les premiers appareils à environ 200 000 $ l'unité seront livrés en 2011.

Découvrez la technologie 2011 ! Nintendo 3DS

Dernièrement, nous vous avons fait part d'un petit bilan concernant l'année 2010, les temps fort de l'année dans le domaine High Tech. Passons maintenant à 2011 en retraçant nos attentes pour cette nouvelle année !

Nintendo 3DS

Lors de salon E3, Nintendo avait surpris en annonçant que sa nouvelle DS disposerait d'un écran en 3D sans utilisation des lunettes prévues à cet effet. Selon les communiqués de Nintendo, la console sera en vente en Février. Attendons maintenant de voir de plus près comment cela fonctionnera !

La 3D sans lunettes

Bien qu'il existe des supports avec ce type d'écran, ils sont encore très faibles (limité aux smartphones et autres petits appareils) et ce que l'on voit le plus, ce sont les écrans avec lunettes. Pour 2011, nous nous attendons à voir arriver cette technologie sur des écrans plus grands mais aussi à en voir la commercialisation. L'année a déjà bien commencé avec quelques annonces lors du CES 2011 de Las Vegas qui s'est déroulé du 6 au 9 janvier.

Les tablettes sous Android Honeycomb

De nombreux fabricants ont retardé le lancement de leurs tablettes, par choix, car il n'y a pas encore de logiciel parfaitement adapté pour les utiliser. Les constructeurs vont donc devoir se décider entre Windows 7 et Android. Microsoft va avoir une forte concurrence sur ce marché puisque Google a promis que sa nouvelle plateforme serait idéale pour les tablettes, et c'est ce que l'on a déjà pu voir dans les quelques démonstrations de HoneyComb.

iPad 2

C'est bien évidemment la tablette que nous attendons le plus, d'une part parce ce que c'est l'iPad qui a relancé le marché des tablettes tactiles, d'autre part parce que face à la concurrence, Apple va devoir se défendre avec les bons arguments ! Selon les rumeurs, cette iPad 2 sera plus petit, plus ergonomique et équipé de deux caméras (frontale et arrière) mais aussi de meilleurs haut-parleurs.

iPhone 5

Bien qu'il n'y ait rien d'officiel concernant cet iPhone 5, c'est un appareil très attendu. On pourrait même dire qu'Apple est attendu au tournant vu la pub faite à l'iPhone 4 avec le fameux problème d'antenne... Aux dernières rumeurs, l'appareil aurait une nouvelle interface, un système de navigation intégré, une fonction "disque dur externe", l'antenne cachée dans le logo, un dual core, une puce NFC, un port Micro USB, un APN 10 Mégapixels filmant en HD 1080p...

Puces NFC

L'année 2011 va voir arriver de nouveaux smartphones qui seront équipés d'une puce NFC (Near Field Communication) permettant par exemple le paiement avec le mobile. Ce système encore peu répandu devrait s'imposer au fil des années, espèrons que l'année qui vient de commencer soit une année locomotive pour cette technologie.

Évolution des readers électroniques

Le Kindle est déjà le roi sur le marché des lecteurs électroniques avec un nombre record de ventes. Mais le succès de la projéniture d’Amazon pourrait bien être compromis par l’émergence du Nook color de Barnes & Noble qui propose un écran couleur et le système d'exploitation Android. Ce secteur devrait pas mal bouger aussi cette année... Wait & See !

On attend avec impatience la sortie de la dernière Technologie TV : « SED », annoncé par Toshiba Corp et Canon.
D’après les dernières nouvelles les écrans SED seront commercialisés en fin 2007 ou en 2008 !

Mais c’est quoi les écrans SED ?
SED : Surface-conduction Electron-emitter c'est-à-dire Affichage par émission d'électrons et conduction de surface.
SED offre une meilleur qualité d’image par rapport aux LCD et aux écrans plasma en raison de son  nouveau type de technologie à panneau plat d’affichage: beaucoup plus de précision et de raffinement dans les détails, les SED fournissent un temps d’exécution exceptionnel : le contraste est nettement avancé, ils sont plus réactifs que les plasmas et les LCD, leur noir est bien plus profond. Et ce n’est pas tout, ils consomment moins d’énergie, et leurs coûts n’est pas plus chers.

Mobile Firefox Skips Flash In Favor Of HTML5

A week after launching the official release of Firefox 4, Mozilla is following up today withMobile Firefox for Android and Maemo phones (for all twelve of you Maemo fans out there). For Android, the browser is now available on the Android Market,.

The Android browser fairly rocks. It almost makes me want to switch to Android. The mobile browser syncs all of your bookmarks, browsing history, passwords, and even open tabs with your Firefox browser on your desktop. So you can pick up browsing where you left off when you leave your desk. This syncing is huge. The browser won’t be availabl for the iPhoen anytime soon because of restrictions Apple places on browsing apps—for one thing, it doesn’t use Webkit. (But Mozilla does offer an iPhone app that syncs mobile Safari with your Firefox desktop browser).

One thing Firefox mobile doesn’t have is support for Flash, even though Android has a big partnership with Adobe to make Flash work on mobile. I spoke with some folks from Mozilla yesterday about this topic. Eventually, Firefox mobile will support Flash, but it is just not there yet in terms of responsiveness. The focus right now is on HTML5 and CSS. It is amazing some of the 3D effects, animations, video, and other in-browser graphics you can now get with HTML5. Check out some of the demos here after you download Firefox to your phone.

Some other features I really like in the browser is the way it handles tabbed browsing, its snapping zoom, and the Awesome Screen. Your tabs are always available in a thin column on the left which can be accessed with a simple swipe. If you are on a webpage that is not optimized for a mobile device, you can snap the zoom with a double tap to align with a column or box on the page and then scroll up and down normally. The Awesome Screen is the mobile version of the Awesome Bar on FireFox desktop. As you type, it makes suggestions based on your previous browsing history, bookmarks, and open tabs.
