Geneva 2011: MINI Cooper SD

MINI has unveiled its flagship diesel model, the Cooper SD hot hatch. It promises rock bottom running costs and performance to boot, so buyers will be able to have their cake and eat it.
What's all the fuss about?
It's not likely to worry hardcore petrol hot hatches such as the RenaultSport Mégane, but the MINI Cooper SD has sufficient poke to battle it out with rival diesel hot hatches like Volkswagen's Golf GTD. Expect 141bhp from the Cooper SD's 2.0-litre engine, which makes it good for 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds and 134mph flat out.
The MINI is just as frugal as it is punchy, as it returns 65.7mpg and emits only 114g/km, which means £30 a year road tax for UK buyers.
Anything that stands out?
A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, but buyers will be able to specify a six-speed automatic version, which will also become an option on the Cooper D.
The MINI Convertible, Clubman and Countryman will all be available in SD diesel guise along with the hatchback, and there's also a Sport pack available on all models, which adds a body kit and a series of driving upgrades at extra cost.
